Growth

Wallonia’s most populous municipality

Charleroi had 206,900 residents on 1 January 2026, 1,137 more than a year earlier. In Belgium only Antwerp and Ghent are larger; in Wallonia, Liège comes next with 198,102.1

The arrondissement of Charleroi has 403,422 residents, and the city puts Charleroi Métropole at 600,000.12

For your menu

A big municipality means guests who compare before they come: an up-to-date online menu answers before the phone rings.

Students

A growing campus

In the city centre, CampusUCharleroi brings together ULB, UMONS, HEPH-Condorcet and three adult-education schools (ISI, ILT, IETC). The city counts nearly 10,000 students; enrolments rose by 3% at the universities and 6% at the colleges between 2025 and 2026.2

The stated goal is 15,000 students by 2035. The former Notre-Dame hospital buildings, a redesigned Square Yernaux and the M5 metro line are due in 2027 and 2028; student housing, concentrated in the Ville Haute, will change in 2027.2

For your menu

If students fill your room, the lunch menu must show at lunchtime and its price must be fixable without a reprint.

Local food

From Chez Duche to Vilain’s small plates

The city describes a food offer running from French and Belgian cooking to Mediterranean and Asian flavours, and publishes an interactive map of all its hospitality venues.4

For Charleroi and its surroundings the MICHELIN Guide lists 40 restaurants: one with two stars, five with one star, 14 Bib Gourmands and 20 selected addresses. Of these, 27 flag vegetarian options, 8 vegan and 7 gluten-free; 29 have a terrace.3

Chez Duche has served horse rib steak with homemade fries since 1993; at Vilain, 10 to 15 small plates change every week with what local suppliers bring.56

For your menu

A menu that changes weekly does not fit a frozen PDF; and when 7 restaurants out of 40 flag a gluten-free option, yours stands out.

Local rules

A terrace without a permit: administrative penalties

In Charleroi, running a terrace without a permit is one of the offences a municipal administrative penalty can target, alongside opening a venue without authorisation or breaking the conditions of a permit.7

Depending on the facts, the sanctioning officer can issue a warning, a fine, mediation, community service, suspension or withdrawal of the permit, or even an administrative closure. If a fine above €70 is considered, you can ask to be heard.7

The administrative police department only sees people by appointment.7

For your menu

Get the permit before you put out tables and an A-board: the penalty can go as far as withdrawal.

Questions

Questions and answers

What happens to a terrace without a permit in Charleroi?

A municipal administrative penalty. The sanctioning officer can go from a warning to a fine, to suspending or withdrawing the permit, and as far as an administrative closure where the rules allow.

If the fine being considered is above €70, you can ask to be heard.7

How do I reach Charleroi’s administrative police department?

By appointment only: the department asks people not to turn up without one. To contest a penalty there is an online form; only if that fails, 071/86 89 92 answers on working days from 9am to noon.7

Does a QR code let me skip posting the menu outside?

No. The FPS Economy wants prices readable from outside with no special effort such as scanning a code; a QR code can only come in addition. Our Belgium page sets out the rules.

On Menyu, the QR code leads to the full menu, translated and up to date.16

National menu rules
How many students does Charleroi have?

Nearly 10,000 according to the city, which aims for 15,000 by 2035, with new buildings in 2027 and 2028. If your lunch trade depends on them, a Menyu category can show at lunchtime only.2

Do I have to show allergens on my menu?

For AFSCA, the food safety agency, allergens in non-prepacked food must be shown clearly and be immediately available on the spot, in restaurants as elsewhere.

Menyu lists them dish by dish, from the EU list of 14.17

Prepare my allergen chart
Does online payment work for a Charleroi restaurant?

Are the restaurants listed Menyu customers?

No. They come from the MICHELIN selection for Charleroi and its surroundings, 40 restaurants in all; we list them without having approached them.3
