Your Winterthur restaurant: the menu changes, the QR code stays

In 2025, 7,367 people moved to Winterthur, and the City grants outdoor seating on public ground for one season at a time. Your online menu can keep up: the QR code stays the same, the content changes whenever you decide.

Growth

Slower growth, constant movement

On 31 December 2025 Winterthur had 120,741 residents according to the Federal Statistical Office, making it Switzerland’s sixth-largest city.12

The City’s residents’ register, which also counts people registered with a secondary residence, had 122,758 people on the same date, 292 more than a year earlier. At 0.2%, growth was the slowest in fifteen years: no additional homes were built in 2025.23

The population still turns over: 7,367 people arrived in 2025 and 7,326 left. Since 1985 the city has gained almost 38,000 residents.23

Visitors and languages

More than one resident in four is not Swiss

At the end of 2025, 72.9% of Winterthur’s residents were Swiss nationals, down from 73.1% a year earlier. Their average age was 40.6.3

In the City’s 2025 survey of new arrivals, culture, leisure, education and transport links stand out as Winterthur’s strengths; 87% of newcomers say they are satisfied or very satisfied with their housing.2

A German-only menu leaves out part of your neighbourhood; an English version is the least you need.

Seasons and events

Albanifest, the last weekend in June

Albanifest, Winterthur’s biggest festival, takes place every year on the last weekend in June; the next one runs from 25 to 27 June 2027. For three days, 70 local clubs run food tents and stalls in the old town, with cooking from every country.4

To run a festival food tent, the City asks for the licence application two weeks before the event; a late application can incur express fees.5

On the last weekend in June the old town fills with food from everywhere: your menu has to be readable in seconds.

Local rules

Street café: a permit for one season at most

In Winterthur only the holder of a restaurant licence can be allowed to put tables and chairs on public ground in front of the premises. The building department (Bauamt) first approves the area; the application then goes to the city police, who send the permit by post.56

The City’s regulation (SRS 7.9-1) requires a detailed plan; the police set the size and layout after hearing the neighbours, and the permit lasts one season at most. Third-party advertising is banned, as are sausage stands and vending machines, and the holder cleans the area every day.6

Fees follow the city police’s scale, and public ground used without a permit can be cleared at the offender’s expense. For the licence itself, the City wants the file four weeks before opening. Contact: the administrative police, Obermühlestrasse 5, +41 52 267 58 68.56

To close later, a venue must sit in a zone with noise-sensitivity level 3 or 4 and have the owner’s consent; the City first grants a provisional permit for one year, then a permanent one if there have been no complaints.5

For your menu

The permit comes round again each season: a good moment to bring the terrace menu up to date, without reprinting everything.

The tables the guides follow

According to the Winterthurer Zeitung, the 2026 Gault&Millau keeps Rosa Pulver at 15 points and Taggenberg at 14. Two newcomers make the guide: the National, by the station, with 13 points, and Menoir in Oberwinterthur.7

The MICHELIN Guide also includes Rosa Pulver and Menoir in its Winterthur and surroundings selection, which lists 92 restaurants. That is the 2025 edition; the next one will be unveiled on 2 November 2026.8910

At Taggenberg the dishes are built as vegetarian, with meat or seafood as an option. At Menoir, vegetarians get a menu just as meat eaters do.711

For your menu

The city’s best-rated tables put vegetarian dishes on a par with meat: your guests expect to spot them at a glance.

With Menyu

What Menyu brings to a Winterthur menu

Menyu puts your menu online behind a QR code in your colours. In Winterthur it mainly helps you keep up with a changing clientele and a terrace that comes back every season. Your prices show there in Swiss francs.

  • An up-to-date menu for newcomers

The QR code always leads to the same address: change a dish, a photo or an allergen and the menu is current as soon as you publish, with no reprint. The code carries your colours and logo. For prices, choose Swiss francs in the settings: you type them in francs and the menu shows them with nothing converted.

    • Same QR code, menu you can edit at willIncluded
    • Code in the restaurant’s colours and logoIncluded
    • Prices in Swiss francs, with no conversionIncluded
  • English and other languages on the same menu

Menyu translates your dishes into 25 languages, English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Turkish among them. The translation is automatic and you check it before publishing. The menu’s buttons stay in French or English.

    • 25 languages for your dishes, translation checked by youIncluded
  • Vegetarian dishes spotted at a glance

Guests filter the menu: vegetarian, or free from whichever allergens they choose. Each dish shows its allergens, taken from the EU list of 14.

    • Diet filters for your guestsIncluded
    • EU-list allergens, dish by dishIncluded

Limits

What Menyu does not do

  • Online payment is not available to a Winterthur restaurant: payment accounts are created in France only.
  • The menu’s buttons (basket, filters) do not switch to German: they stay in French or English, even when the dishes are translated. The opening status shows in French.
  • At sign-up, the optional phone field expects a ten-digit French number: a Swiss number is saved wrongly. Leave it blank.
  • Menu prices show in francs, but Menyu bills its subscription in euros.
  • One Menyu account covers one venue: two restaurants mean two accounts.

Four Winterthur restaurants the guides pick

Two of these addresses are in both the MICHELIN Guide and the 2026 Gault&Millau, the other two in Gault&Millau only. All four are in Winterthur itself, from the centre to Oberwinterthur.

None of these four uses Menyu, and none was contacted. They come from the MICHELIN Guide and from the 2026 Gault&Millau as reported by the Winterthurer Zeitung; on 21 October 2026 each one showed its opening hours on its website.
