Cooking for Bern’s visitors: a menu in their language, kept up to date

Growth
Switzerland’s fifth city, and its federal city
On 31 December 2025 Bern had 138,562 residents, the fifth-largest Swiss city after Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne. It gained 567 residents over the year.1
Statistik Stadt Bern, the City’s statistics office, counts 39 hotels and hostels with 2,858 rooms on average over the year; their occupancy rate stood at 65.3% in 2025.2

Visitors and languages
Over half the hotel nights come from abroad
In 2025 the city’s hotels and hostels recorded 623,942 arrivals and 1,071,967 nights, their second-best year after 2024. Guests from abroad accounted for 585,672 of those nights, Swiss guests for 486,295.2
After Switzerland come Germany (104,078 nights), the United States (81,282), the United Kingdom (32,404), France (32,029), Italy (28,243) and China (27,567). Nights by Chinese guests rose by 18.5% in a year.2
Guests stay 1.7 nights on average: 1.9 nights for visitors from abroad, 1.5 for Swiss guests.2
For your menu
A visitor staying under two nights decides quickly. Faced with a German-only menu, they guess what they are ordering.
Seasons and events
Zibelemärit and the summer peak
Zibelemärit, the onion market, is Bern’s biggest market. It is held every year on the fourth Monday in November; the next one falls on Monday 23 November 2026. The stalls mostly sell onion braids, wreaths and figures.3
The market officially runs from 6 am to 6 pm, but the first sales start at 4 am. The City calls it a unique event in Switzerland and in neighbouring countries, with the first out-of-town visitors arriving at dawn.3
Over the year, hotel nights peak in summer: about 126,500 in August 2025, against 58,500 in January.2
For your menu
On 23 November the old town fills up before daybreak: that morning, your menu should show what you serve at dawn.
Local food
Seven MICHELIN Guide restaurants within the city
For Bern and its surroundings the MICHELIN Guide lists 36 restaurants: 11 with one star, 10 Bib Gourmands and 15 selected addresses. Seven of them are in Bern itself.4
The guide’s filters flag vegetarian options at 34 of the 36, gluten-free at 27 and vegan at 18; 28 have a terrace. In town, ZOE holds a star with a vegetarian kitchen.4
The selection online is the 2025 edition; the guide unveils its 2026 selection on 2 November 2026, in Andermatt.56
For your menu
When 34 restaurants out of 36 offer a vegetarian option, guests expect to find one on your menu without asking.

Outdoor seating on public ground: what the City asks
In Bern, outdoor seating on public ground (Aussenbestuhlung) starts with a call to the City’s Gastgewerbe team on +41 31 321 52 25. The team advises venues and passes their applications on to the Bern-Mittelland government office (Regierungsstatthalteramt). Its page gives no timescale.7
The City’s fee regulation sets a price per square metre per year: CHF 190 on the squares of the upper old town (Bärenplatz, Waisenhausplatz, Kornhausplatz and others), CHF 140 in the lower old town and CHF 95 elsewhere. Seating that cannot be used on market days pays 25% less; demonstrations or public events bring no reduction.8
Reviewing an application for a new venue or an extension, outdoor seating included, is billed by the hour at CHF 115. A venue may hold up to four events with music on its outdoor area each year, with a loudspeaker permit from the City.78
Under its Nette Toilette scheme, the City also pays venues that open their toilets to the public.7
For your menu
At CHF 190 a square metre, every outdoor seat has to earn its keep: a guest who sits down should be able to read the menu without waiting for one to arrive.

Five MICHELIN Guide restaurants, from Münstergasse to the station
These five Bern restaurants are in the MICHELIN Guide’s current selection: two starred tables, one of them vegetarian, and three selected addresses. The guide rates their prices from €€ to €€€€.
None of these restaurants is a Menyu customer, and none was contacted. All come from the MICHELIN Guide selection; on 21 October 2026 each website showed opening hours, a menu or a booking link.
With Menyu
A Bern menu on Menyu: what works
Menyu publishes your menu at an address that never changes, behind a QR code in your colours. In Bern it helps most with your visitors’ languages and with the terrace, with prices shown in francs. One caveat: no online payment in Switzerland.
Dishes in your visitors’ languages
Menyu translates your menu content into 25 languages, among them English, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese. The translation is automatic, so check dish names before you publish. The menu’s buttons (basket, filters) stay in French or English, not German, and the opening status shows in French.
- Dishes translated into 25 languages, to check before publishingIncluded
A QR code on your outdoor tables
The QR code carries your colours and logo and always opens the same address: a dish, a photo or an allergen changes without reprinting. Choose Swiss francs in the settings and the online menu carries your CHF prices, exactly as you type them.
- QR code in the house colours, with its logoIncluded
- A fixed address: edit the menu without reprintingIncluded
- Prices in CHF, typed as they are, nothing convertedIncluded
Allergens dish by dish, diets at a tap
Each dish shows its allergens, picked from the EU list of 14. Guests filter the menu: vegetarian, or free from whichever allergens they choose.
- The 14 allergens, shown dish by dishIncluded
- A vegetarian filter and one for each of the 14 allergensIncluded
An early menu for market day
A category can show only at set hours on set days of the week, on Bern time: an early-morning offer on Mondays, switched on for Zibelemärit and off again afterwards.
- Categories shown by day and timeIncluded
Limits
What Menyu does not do
- No online payment: Menyu only opens payment accounts in France.
- Dishes can be shown in German, but not the menu’s buttons (basket, filters): they stay in French or English, and the opening status shows in French.
- The phone field, optional at sign-up, only takes ten digits in French format: a +41 number will not fit, and a 079… number would be saved with the +33 prefix. Leave it blank.
- The online menu carries your CHF prices, but Menyu’s subscription is billed in euros.

The City’s fee regulation charges per square metre per year: CHF 190 on the squares of the upper old town, CHF 140 in the lower old town, CHF 95 elsewhere, and 25% less if the seating cannot be used on market days. Reviewing the application is billed on top, by the hour (CHF 115).

Menyu translates your dishes into 25 languages, these included. The menu’s buttons stay in French or English.2

The Swiss rules for menus, prices included, are on the Switzerland page.
Swiss menu rulesIs the Swiss allergen list the one Menyu uses?
Yes. Annex 6 of the Swiss federal ordinance on food information lists 14 ingredients, from cereals containing gluten to molluscs. They are the same 14 as the EU list, which Menyu shows dish by dish.19

No. They come from the MICHELIN Guide selection, which lists 36 restaurants for Bern and its surroundings, seven of them in town. We did not contact them; each entry links to its source.4

In euros, as everywhere: Essentiel at €49 a month, Premium at €79, Beyond at €149, with a seven-day trial on Essentiel. One account covers one venue.
