From Kelham Island to Ecclesall Road: a QR code menu for Sheffield restaurant owners

Students
60,000 students, two universities
Welcome to Sheffield, the visitor site run by the city council, counts 60,000 students between Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield.12
At mid-2025 the ONS counted 12,636 residents aged 20 against 6,597 aged 17, and a median age of 37, below the 40.7 of England and Wales.3
For your menu
If students are part of your trade, a lunch deal or a student offer should go up and come down as easily as term starts and ends.
Visitors and languages
New residents from abroad
In the year to mid-2025, 11,493 people moved to Sheffield from abroad and 8,414 left for another country. Moves within the UK went the other way: 4,277 more people left for elsewhere in the country than arrived.3
The city counted 579,517 residents at mid-2025, 718 fewer than a year earlier but 27,761 more than in 2011.3
For your menu
Neighbours who arrived from abroad may read a dish name more easily in their first language than in English.
Seasons and events
A calendar of big weekends
The World Snooker Championship has been played at the Crucible Theatre since 1977. Tramlines is held in Hillsborough Park every July, with fringe events in venues across the city (24 to 26 July in 2026), and October brings the Off the Shelf literary festival and No Bounds, a weekend of experimental music.2
Get Together, a festival of new music and local food and drink, takes over venues across Kelham Island and Neepsend each year, and the Sheffield Food Festival returns annually.2
For your menu
A festival weekend or a snooker final often deserves its own short menu, ready before the crowd arrives and gone after it leaves.
Local food
Twelve MICHELIN tables and an old cutlery factory
The MICHELIN Guide lists 12 restaurants for Sheffield and its surroundings, one of them starred: JÖRO. All twelve offer vegetarian options, ten a whole vegetarian menu and five vegan options.4
In 2024 Time Out called Cutlery Works, a converted cutlery factory with 14 vendors, the largest food hall in the north of England. At Rafters in Nether Green, the steak knives are handmade by one of the city’s last Little Mesters, at Portland Works. The council’s visitor site counts microbreweries among the city’s draws.256
For your menu
With vegetarian menus this common in the selection, guests look for the marks on each dish: diets and allergens should be visible before they ask.
Local rules
Sheffield’s pavement café licence, priced by the table
You need a licence from Sheffield City Council to put tables and chairs outside your premises on the highway. If you sell food or drink, take the furniture in every day and use no speakers, you apply under the Levelling Up and Regeneration Act 2023; the licence lasts a year and is renewed before it expires.7
The fee depends on the number of tables: £168 for one or two, £200 for three to five, £250 for six to ten and £301 for eleven or more. The file holds a layout plan, which need not be an architect’s drawing, pictures of the furniture, public liability insurance of at least £5 million, a risk assessment and an ACT Awareness e-learning certificate.7
On the pavement, the café stays within your shop front, inside tap barriers that visually impaired people can follow, with at least 1.5 metres clear beyond them; in busy streets the council may ask for 2 metres.7
A public notice stays up at the premises for 14 days from the day after you apply, while the council consults its highways department and South Yorkshire Police. With no issue, the licence is issued after those 14 days; otherwise the council decides within 14 days of the end of the consultation. The licensing team answers on 0114 273 4264, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.7
For your menu
Count your tables before you apply: the fee steps up at three, six and eleven.
Key facts
Sheffield in figures
According to the guides
Five Sheffield tables, from Nether Green to Little Kelham
Three come from the MICHELIN Guide, among them JÖRO, the only starred restaurant of its Sheffield selection; two come from Time Out’s 2024 list of the city’s best restaurants. They run from tasting menus to an Indian restaurant open since 1967.
These restaurants are not Menyu customers and were not approached. The list comes from the MICHELIN Guide and Time Out; on 21 October 2026 each one’s website showed its menus, opening hours or bookings.

What Menyu does not do
- Prices on the menu can be in pounds, chosen in the settings, but the subscription is billed in euros.
- The opening status and scheduled categories follow the UK time you choose in the settings, but the open or closed status is written in French, ‘Ouvert · Jusqu’à…’, even on an English menu.
- Online payment is unavailable, because Menyu opens payment accounts in France only; Premium orders are paid at the counter.
- Sign-up asks for an optional phone number in the French format, ten digits; a Sheffield number will not go through, so skip it.
- Tips and service charges cannot be added to orders taken on the menu.
Questions
Questions and answers
How much is a pavement café licence in Sheffield?
It depends on the number of tables: £168 for one or two, £200 for three to five, £250 for six to ten and £301 for eleven or more. The licence runs for a year and is renewed before it expires.
Applications need a layout plan, pictures of the furniture, public liability insurance of at least £5 million, a risk assessment and an ACT Awareness e-learning certificate.7
How soon can my tables go out after I apply?
After 14 days at the earliest. Your notice stays up for 14 consecutive days from the day after you apply, while the council consults its highways department and South Yorkshire Police; with no issue, the licence follows. If something needs settling, the council decides within 14 days of the end of the consultation.
The licensing team answers on 0114 273 4264, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.7
Can I serve alcohol or play music at my pavement café?
Alcohol outside needs a premises licence under the Licensing Act 2003, or a variation of the one you hold. Speakers or fixed furniture take you to the other route, under the Highways Act 1980, with planning permission and a notice displayed for 28 days.7
Are Menyu’s 14 allergens the ones UK food law lists?
Yes. The Food Standards Agency names 14 allergens that food businesses must declare, from celery and cereals containing gluten to sulphites and tree nuts, and they match the 14 that Menyu marks on each dish.
How to present them in a restaurant is set out on the United Kingdom page.15
Allergen rules in the UKIs Menyu ready for a Sheffield restaurant?
For the menu, yes: a QR code that never changes, dishes in 25 languages, allergens and diet filters, with prices in pounds and schedules on UK time once you choose both in the settings. Not for the rest: guests cannot pay online, the sign-up phone field refuses a UK number, orders have no tip line and the opening status reads in French. The plans are billed in euros.
The United Kingdom page sets out what works there.
What Menyu does in the UKCan my lunch menu disappear at 3pm on its own?
It can: give the lunch category its hours and it hides itself outside them. Choose UK time in the settings and Menyu reads those hours on the Sheffield clock: for a 3pm finish, type 3pm.

How this page was made
Page written by the Menyu team, a publisher based in Montpellier, France. Figures, rules and addresses come from the pages cited, read on 21 October 2026: the ONS, National Records of Scotland, Sheffield City Council and its Welcome to Sheffield site, the Food Standards Agency, Google’s autocomplete, the MICHELIN Guide, Time Out and the restaurants’ own websites. Statements about Menyu were checked against its code that day and updated on 22 October 2026 for the currency and time zone settings. None of the restaurants is a Menyu customer. The illustration was generated by AI and shows no real place.
