Local food
A UNESCO City of Gastronomy since 2017
UNESCO designated San Antonio a Creative City of Gastronomy in 2017. The City describes its cooking as a confluence of cultures: Indigenous roots, the tastes brought by Spanish colonists in the 1700s, and European, Asian and African influences that arrived in the 1800s.4
Its World Heritage Office organizes the yearly Pueblos del Maiz showcase, a free celebration of corn held at Pearl on October 10, 2025, with visiting chefs from Tucson, Castelldefels and Bergamo, whose program included a hands-on tamal workshop.4
For your menu
In a city that puts its cooking forward, a dish name should make sense to an English reader and a Spanish reader alike.
Local food
Sixteen MICHELIN picks, three with a star
The MICHELIN Guide lists 16 San Antonio restaurants: 3 with one star, 5 Bib Gourmands and 8 selected restaurants. Three of them serve Mexican cooking, two barbecue and one Tex-Mex.5
Its filters flag vegetarian options at 13 of the 16, gluten-free options at 7 and vegan options at 6.5
For your menu
Most of the city’s guide picks offer a vegetarian option, so diners will look for yours on the menu, not in a question to the server.
Local rules
Downtown sidewalk cafés: a yearly permit
Street-level restaurants downtown can seat guests on the public sidewalk with an annual permit from the City’s Downtown Operations. Market Square, La Villita and the River Walk are excluded, and a clear path at least 6 feet wide must remain for pedestrians.6
The file holds a site plan, a photo of the spot and a letter of insurance, plus, where they apply, approval from the Historic and Design Review Commission and your TABC alcohol permit. The Office of Historic Preservation and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility office must also sign off before the sidewalk is used.6
After a site visit, the City invoices a fee set by size: $250 a year under 250 square feet, $500 from 250 to 500, and $750 above that. Send the file to [email protected] or bring it to 400 N. St. Mary’s St., Suite 100, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the office answers on 210-207-3677.6
For your menu
Measure the 6 feet of clear sidewalk before you draw the plan: it decides how many tables fit, and the fee follows the area.

11 million passengers at SAT
San Antonio International Airport handled 11,094,278 passengers in 2024, its busiest year and the first above 11 million, nearly 4% more than in 2023. July 2024 was its busiest month, with 1,032,610 passengers.3
New routes for 2025 included daily nonstops to Washington, D.C., and the airport’s first nonstop flights to San Juan.3

A visitor choosing where to eat downtown can read your menu online before walking past the door.

All five are in the MICHELIN Guide’s current San Antonio selection: two one-star restaurants, two Bib Gourmands and one selected restaurant, at prices from $ to $$$$.
These five are not Menyu customers and were not contacted. They come from the MICHELIN Guide; on October 21, 2026, each one’s website showed its hours, menus, ordering or reservations.
With Menyu
Menyu for a San Antonio menu: what works, what waits
Menyu publishes your menu at an address that never changes, behind a QR code in your colors. In San Antonio the reading side works today, in English and in Spanish, with prices in dollars and local time set in the settings; online payment and a tip line are still missing.
English and Spanish on one menu
Write your dishes once and let Menyu translate them into Spanish, or into any of its 25 languages; you review each translation from a dashboard that runs in English. The menu’s buttons, on the other hand, stay in English or French.
- Spanish and 24 other menu languages, reviewed by youIncluded
- Dashboard in EnglishIncluded
A code on the downtown sidewalk table
On a permitted sidewalk table, the QR code opens a menu whose address never changes: update a dish from your phone and the same code shows it. The code can carry your colors and logo. Keep a printed menu for guests who ask for one; prices on the Menyu page are in dollars once you choose that currency in the settings.
- Edits go live behind the same codeIncluded
- A QR code with your colors and logoIncluded
- Prices in dollars, chosen in the settingsIncluded
Show the dish before the order
Your menu can carry up to ten photo or video stories. For a visitor new to barbecue by the pound or to a tamal fresh from the steamer, a few seconds of video replace a long description.
- Up to ten photo or video stories on the menuIncluded
Vegetarian or gluten-free, in one tap
Guests filter the menu for vegetarian dishes or leave out the allergens they choose. The allergen tags behind them follow the EU list of 14; the United States page explains how that list differs from the nine major allergens of US law.

Questions
Questions and answers
How do I get a sidewalk café permit in downtown San Antonio?
Through the City’s Downtown Operations, for street-level restaurants on public sidewalks downtown, outside Market Square, La Villita and the River Walk. Email the application, site plan, photo and letter of insurance to [email protected], or drop them at 400 N. St. Mary’s St., Suite 100.
After a site visit, the City invoices $250, $500 or $750 a year depending on the café’s size, then issues the permit once you pay and send the certificate of insurance.6
Can the same menu work in English and Spanish?
For the dishes, yes: Menyu translates names and descriptions into 25 languages, Spanish among them, and you check them before publishing. The buttons around them stay in English, and the opening status shows in French.
In San Antonio, 40.4% of residents aged five and over speak a language other than English at home.2
What is missing for a Texas restaurant?
Online payment, above all: it works only for accounts opened in France, and orders have no tip line. The opening status reads in French, even on an English menu, the phone field at sign-up expects a French number, and plans are billed in euros. Prices in dollars and San Antonio time are covered: you choose both in the settings.
Allergen tags follow the EU list; US law names nine major food allergens, from milk and eggs to sesame.18
What is San Antonio’s City of Gastronomy title?
A UNESCO Creative Cities designation, received in 2017 for a cuisine that mixes Indigenous, Spanish, European, Asian and African influences. The City’s World Heritage Office promotes it through events such as the yearly Pueblos del Maiz showcase, which in October 2025 brought chefs from Tucson, Castelldefels and Bergamo to Pearl.4
Can I start from the menu I already have online?
Yes. Paste the link to your website, your Uber Eats page or a PDF of your menu, and Menyu builds a preview without an account. Once you sign up, choose US dollars in the settings and your prices show in dollars; nothing is converted.
Preview my menu from a linkHow much is Menyu a month?
Essentiel costs €49 a month, Premium €79 and Beyond €149, all billed in euros even when your menu shows dollars, with a seven-day trial on Essentiel. Each venue needs its own account.
See the plansAre these San Antonio restaurants Menyu customers?
No. All five come from the MICHELIN Guide’s 16 San Antonio restaurants, and we did not contact them. Each entry links to its source.5
Limits
What Menyu does not do
- Online payment works only with an account created in France, so a San Antonio restaurant cannot take payment through Menyu.
- Allergen tags use the EU list of 14 rather than the US list of nine major food allergens.
- Orders have no line for a tip or a service charge.
- Dishes can be in Spanish, but the menu’s own buttons (cart, filters) stay in English or French, and the opening status reads in French only, even on an English menu.
- The plans themselves are billed in euros, even with dish prices in dollars.

How this page was made
The Menyu team, a publisher based in Montpellier, France, wrote this page from the sources it cites, each read on October 21, 2026: the U.S. Census Bureau, the City of San Antonio, the MICHELIN Guide, the FDA and the restaurants’ sites. Menyu shows dollars and keeps Central time through its settings, but cannot yet take US phone numbers or online payment; the page describes it as it stood on October 22, 2026. None of the restaurants listed is a Menyu customer. The illustration is AI-generated and shows no real place.
